Memories

I have such great memories of my childhood and some of them are influenced by the great decade many of us grew up in – the 80’s!  Have any of you seen the show “I Love the 80’s”?  I’ve only seen it once or twice but it definitely gives you that nostalgic feeling!  Anyway, I just wanted to share a few things I loved (& some that I didn’t) things from the rad 80’s.

  1. Jelly shoes – these had to be number 1 because truly they were the best!  I had several pairs – my favorite were turquoise with a little heel.  As most of you girls will remember, they always got rocks stuck in the bottom. :)

  2. Jelly bracelets – goes with number 1.  I don’t think there was any limit to how many you could wear at one time!

  3. Charm jewelry – not the classic silver kind but the plastic ones that never made it out of the 80’s.  You could buy the charms in vending machines and dime stores and probably just about anywhere.  When I lost my first tooth – I picked a saliboat charm for the tooth fairy to give me.

  4. Mullets – this was not something I liked but sadly, how my mom cut my hair.  I’m trying to get over the trauma. :)  I’m glad most of you didn’t know me then and hopefully the rest of you can’t remember.  All surviving pictures should be destroyed.

  5. Leg Warmers – mine were purple w/ pink hearts.  How cool was I!

  6. Pegged pants – we can still bring this back guys!

  7. Neon colors – Wow!  You didn’t need orange vests when you were riding bikes.  I had several t-shirts and of course accessories!

  8. T-shirt slides – so you didn’t have to tie your t-shirt to the side, you could thread it through the decorated slide.  To go with #7, mine was neon yellow with neon pink, green & yellow ribbon curls that hung off it.

  9. Double socks – do I even need to remind you! :)

  10. Big bangs – I never had mine as high or as awesome as the other girls but that wasn’t because I didn’t try.  Hairspray, curl up, hairspray, curl down, hairspray, feather (if you can get your comb through it), hairspray, hairspray, hairspray!

There are tons of other totally rad things: like New Kid’s on the Block, tv shows, other clothing & accessories, phrases…  Perhaps you have some you’d like to add!  I’ll close for now with happy thoughts of our beloved decade!  Cowabunga dudes & dudettes!

For boys it was G.I. Joes and Transformers. And when it came to music, OH MAN!!!! Where to start? Def Leppard rocked the planet (I, of course, have the greatest hits) Michael Jackson (before we knew a weird he really was) Poison and....just countless other gems that must remain in the '80's. What a decade!

Lains...this is great!

I LOVED jelly shoes (and yes rocks always got in them) and had the BIG bangs. I DID NOT know you had a mullet. I think I must see pictures...or have you burned them all?

80's music is great....oh the 80's

Early 80's...I got my first Member's Only jacket and Nike sneaks (before they became huge). Played Mario Bros. and Zelda on the Nintendo (Atari before that- Missile Command, Pitfall, Asteroids, etc.), watched the Star Wars flics in the theater with wide-eyed amazement, oh yeh, Karate Kid too. What else? Before I could drive, my parents would drop my friends and I off at the mall to pick up girls. We were so crazy. I think we were back in time to watch Miami Vice on Friday night. :)

I was in Jr. High in 87-88'. The phrase, "Will you go with me?" comes hauntingly to mind. An early squeeze gave me Bon Jovi's first CD for Christmas. "Shot through the heart, and you're to blame, darling, You give love, a bad name!" Must have been a subliminal message in that as we didn't last long. I remember liking Journey a lot...yeh Josh, Def Leopard, too! Oh, and "Thriller" from Michael Jackson gets my vote for best single from the 80's. "Da..da...da...Thriller...thrill the night... :)

Do you remember Cavaricci pants? sp? (might have been in the 90-91 era) I had some of those and pictures reveal I *always* needed a haircut. I had that mullet look to, Alaina. Hair coming down to my collar and curling up slightly. Cheesy! I had this *big* wing thing going and used lots of hairspray. At least, I can gladly say, I never got one of my ear's pierced.

I''m sorry, but how could anyone (including me) forget Goonies?!?! Classic movie of the 80's.

Of course there is also:
Breakfest Club
Ghostbusters
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Berverly Hills Cop
Karate Kid (though Tom already mentioned this one)
.....oh there are just too many to mention really.

Alaina, I have seen "I love the 80's" and I laughed all the way through. Maybe I was a little young for "Will you go with me?" and Bon Jovi songs but I did have tight leg jeans and multi colored socks among other things. But you forgot to mention big belts- I had several that matched my tights, you know the ones with really big buckles.

Alaina. I recently saw jelly shoes for sale at Gap. WHAT THE? They were cool for 8 year olds, but grown adults? Retro taken to extremes..

I was never allowed to have jelly shoes because they would "ruin my feet." :( But I did have tons of jelly bracelets and the plastic charm necklaces and legwarmers and puffy bangs.

Other 80s classics:
-stirrup pants
-MC Hammer
-Crimping irons
-Puff paint on tshirts
-a pink jean jacket
-side ponytails
-the first tape I ever got to play on my pink boom box was Tiffany, remember her? She sang classics like "I think we're alone now"
-Remember Garbage Pail Kids cards? I was never allowed to have those either.
