Leftovers

I have another confession...perhaps I should re-title my blog: True Confessions of a 30-Something. :)

Here it is: I just don't really like leftovers. They rarely sound good (except maybe soup) and sometimes they downright gross me out. Lest you think all my leftovers go to waste (they do not), I try to make the amount we will eat with maybe one extra serving and I do give leftovers to the kids sometimes (they don't seem to mind). And thankfully, my husband does like leftovers and so he takes them for lunch. Here's the thing, I don't mind at all eating leftovers at my mom's house or at a friend's house - it's just mine. :) Perhaps it has something to do with this strange phenomenon that seems to run in my family - food is sometimes less tasty after you've prepared it...the family will love it and I have no appetite :)

And while we are on this topic, I totally admire people that do freezer cooking. I've tried and it doesn't work well for us. I think it feels kind of like leftovers to me. Maybe part of it is that I generally like to cook and so freezer cooking for me has become chicken breasts, browned ground beef, chunked ham, and vegetables in the freezer to be used in various soups, pastas, and more - instead of already made dishes. My pantry is stocked with canned beans, chicken stock, and canned tomatoes and sauce. It works most of the time and there's always breakfast food for the nights it doesn't work. :)

Anyway, I think it's awesome that my husband loves leftovers and I think it's great that everyone has their own kitchen style. As for me, I'll pass on the leftovers from last night's dinner.

i'm not a big leftover eater either. i wish i was. but luke doesn't mind leftovers at all, so that's good.:) i like certain things like soups and stews leftover, but have a particular aversion to micro-waved chicken. it makes it taste gross.:)

How funny! There is no shame in being a leftovers hater. I actually do not mind them, so long as the food was good to begin with! :) We take leftovers for lunch almost every day, so I am grateful my husband consumes them without complaint.

Oh gross, I hate leftovers too! The one exception to that is sloppy joes...I'll eat them any time. And I have another rule, if leftovers must be eaten....what was originally served hot must ALWAYS be served hot (so no cold pizza). Perhaps that's why I hate leftovers so much. Reheating it makes it nasty.

I am really not either. Though it's not like I cook a lot either but honestly sometimes would prefer a turkey sandwich to leftovers :). I do like pasta leftover and certain soups. Most stuff is good fresh though. :)

So good to see you last week and looking forward to seeing you again at Christmas!!

We could not survive if we didn't eat leftovers, considering I only cook on one day of the week and we eat whatever those (generally) 2 dishes are. Personally, I LOVE leftovers b/c it means I don't have to cook that evening after work. I'm sure it has something to do with lifestyles, right? I'm glad, for you, that you love cooking and have enough time to do it about as often as you want. That's awesome. Maybe someday I'll get there. I do really enjoy cooking. I just don't have time.

I don't eat left overs either, nor do I freezer stock. Really, I just want a personal chef to stay at home and prepare all of my meals according to personal preferences. Wouldn't that be nice?

Alaina, I LOVE your true confessions!!! They make me smile! I do like leftovers (except roast, all that congealed fat) and with just two of us, it's hard to pare some recipes down for just two servings. Hence, leftovers.

I agree that freezer cooking isn't for everyone. I did it once this past summer when Lily was born. I'll admit it was nice, but I prefer freshly made meals. I think the most helpful thing for me is having a well stocked freezer and pantry, like you said. If I know dinner will be rushed, I put something in the crock-pot. Which is essentially as easy as a freezer meal.

My latest discovery is making breakfast sandwiches to keep in the freezer. Sausage, egg and cheese on a biscuit, wrapped individually makes a super easy breakfast to go. Or a meal for everyone when other dinner plans fail.

I actually like leftovers. (sometimes I even look forward to them. or hide them so no one finds them before I can eat them. I'm so bad.)

But the idea of eating a bunch of freezer meals makes me feel sick. I like to cook and I like things fresh and to me, making it ahead of time takes away the fun and eating it out of the freezer takes away the taste.

But you do what you gotta do.

I'm sure I compromise in areas other people wouldn't.
