Happy & Sad

We are thrilled that Calvin will be having surgery on August 20 (we got the call this morning). But it is with sadness that we will say goodbye to the sweet smile we have fallen so deeply in love with. I keep telling Calvin that we are doing this for him - not for us. We love him just the way he is!

Last June, we learned about Calvin and loved him even before we saw pictures (above is the 1st picture we saw of him!) or met him - we never dreamed that we would become so incredibly attached to his beautiful, extra wide smile! We are blessed to be his parents and know that God made it possible through causing Calvin to be born with clefts - we don't see these as defects but rather as God's special touch in bringing our family together.

I have shed a few tears thinking about how much I'll miss that open lip - the way he chews it, makes funny faces with it, and plays with his food through it. I've been excited for this surgery but also dreading it.

Please pray for all of us - it will be a big adjustment and it will be an intense recovery. Please feel free to leave comments for Calvin's surgery pages for his Lifebook/Scrapbook. I would especially love for him to know how much his smile has blessed people and that people are praying for him.

Calvin,
I have never met you but I have been friends with your mom for a very long time. I will be thinking about you a lot on August 20 (it's my first day of teaching!) and on the many days of recovery that follow.

We will be praying for your surgery Calvin. Ironically, Toby is having surgery that day too. Love you all.

Wow- can you believe how fast this year has went by. God gave us miracles. We will pray for Calvin and ask God to put his army of angels in the operating room. We think of you often and love you.

Calvin,

Your smile can light up even the darkest of rooms. Even though it will change on the outside remember that it is YOUR smile, and there are a lot of people in the world (including those like me who have never seen it in person) who will see in your smile the handsome boy you have always been. May God be with you to stay healthy before surgery, be safe in your travels, and may His angels stand guard over you during your procedure.

Sincerely,
A Fan of that Smile

Calvin, we have to agree with your Mommy and Daddy that your smile just fits YOU. It gives you such personality and spunk, and we will miss it too. Next time we see you, Lord willing, it will be all closed up! We are praying so hard for you to stay well and recover quickly. We love you!!!

Calvin,

Your smile may be different, but you will still be the little man that can light up the room.

Love You
