A Close Call

I am dealing with insurance today after waking up to a house filled with smoke on Saturday. We are all fine - no actual fire (we caught it in time) but the house smells awful. Never, never again will I cook a chicken to make stock overnight - it was a first and a last and I was nervous despite knowing many people that do it and cook their chickens for 12 - 36 hours. I monitered it for 1 1/2-2 hours before we went to bed but the steam escape opened on it's own - I had closed it. Over 1 gallon of water boiled out on a very low setting in 5 hours or less. Despite our precautions and discussing leaving it on with Andrew, I just feel irresponsible and awful about it. Sigh. Live and learn. So thankful it wasn't worse.

We are staying with my parents - we cannot stay at home until the smell is dealt with. So if you need to reach us - call our cell phones or e-mail us. We are fine though I admit that I've gotten nervous a few times when I thought I smelled something odd.

On a much more positive note, we had an awesome time with our friends this weekend! There were 10 boys and 1 girl and they all got along very well. We feel incredibly blessed with such amazing friends! They were so understanding as we changed some of the plans due to our house being unavailable.

Finally, Happy Nauryz! It's the Kazakh celebration of spring and we had a great time commemorating it this weekend!

Poor Michael -- I am always worried about fires and have a very strong sense of smell and I think I drive him crazy with my worries. Of course now I'm going to be thinking of it all the more. And I guess I'll never be making stock at night. :) I'll try to keep my worries to myself...
Glad insurance is going to help.

Oh wow. I'm so glad you all are ok. Hope the smell clears out soon and you can get back to life ;)

How scary! I'm glad there wasn't a big fire.

I posted about our Nowruz today on my blog - we did the Persian version, but I read that lots of countries from the areas that used to be Persia around Iran celebrate it too. What did you guys do?

So very sorry about the mishap. We have never had this happen. I use a very very big stock pot. I only use 10 chicken legs, a few carrots, an onion and some celery. I add a bit of salt then add at least 4 gallons of water and let it go. I hope this will not discourage you from maybe starting some stock in the morning and letting it go until you go to bed. Even if it does not go 24 hours it will still be really good stock.

Oh I would do it again but I would have to watch it like a hawk. I did it exactly as my mom does it and with a her pot even.
