Tofu

I was out of chicken and didn't make it to the grocery store today...I was given some tofu...it wasn't bad. :) I marinated it in soy sauce, honey, chicken stock, ginger, garlic, and pepper then stir-fried it with red pepper and pea pods. It was surprisingly well received by the family. Having grown up pretty much hating it, this was a positive step. I have no plans of buying it or planning it in to our menus unless it's free :) but it's nice to know that it's not so horrible. And can even be relatively tasty.

My brother, Elliot has been trying to convince me that it's actually very good and that you can even grill it - I'll admit, I've had my doubts. :) And I'm not there yet - I still prefer meat in my stir-fry but I may be coming around. I think the key was the marinade.

Anyone else like/use tofu? How do you prepare it?

I was a vegetarian for ten years. My older daughter grew up thinking that tofu was chicken. I used to cook it many ways, but my favorite was breaded, sauteed and then topped with a vegetarian brown gravy. When Elise turned 10, one day she asked me, how come your chicken is square? thats when I had to tell her the truth ~~LOL

You want mine:) I'll trade it for some cookies.

Just kidding (about the cookie part). I have not yet ventured into the land of Tofu, but may give it a try.

Haven't had the stuff since I was about 8 and Mom tried once to cook it. I suppose it probably wouldn't be as bad now as my memories. That was brave of you to try it!

As you know Reid and I's diet at home, we actually eat a lot of Tofu (as well as veggie burgers and vegetarian crumbles). I think the key, as you said, is marinating it and/or creating a sauce to go with it. We generally stir-fry it with a marinade, sauce and whatever veggies we have on hand. It does take a little bit of getting used to (the texture mainly) but once you do, it is a healthy protein alternative to meat. I have even found myself craving Reid's honey glazed tofu from time to time!

I would suggest that you do a thorough search on soy before you start consuming it. I've read a lot about how HORRIBLE it is... causing breast cancer, thyroid problems, and menstruation problems. Soy produces estrogen (even in men!!) and causes little girls to develop early (as early as 18 mos. developing breast!) I have never touched soy and will never let it pass through the lips of my family.

Thanks Alyssa, I am aware of the problems with soy and don't go out of my way to use it. We do, however, choose to use it if it is given to us!
