The boys have a birthday party today for a friend from school. So, we ventured out this morning to find a gift for him because, you know, we couldn't do that any sooner. :) I took both boys so they could choose the perfect present for J. Ahem.
We walked done the aisles of the store and the boys excitedly shouted out each thing they wanted to buy for him (they were very good about knowing it was for J). Now, I was thinking maybe a game or something nice like that but that was clearly not what the boys had in mind. I took them to the game section and all they pointed out was the misplaced set of matchbox cars that they wanted to give him. :) So we wandered back to the cars section (they had already chosen stickers with no prompting for me - cars, of course). After looking (and each of us declining a few things), they found the trucks that light up and make noise. And they would not be dissuaded. And really, it was a great gift for a 4-year-old boy but did I mention that it makes noise - like sirens and lights kind of noise?
Anyway, yes, I'm the mom who is giving another mom the gift of a loud toy. Sigh. I did also encourage them to pick out something nice and quiet to go with it - so, we ended up with a set of small construction vehicles with cones and road blocks. So there. We compromised. And we stayed in the budget. And no, they didn't walk all over me, they truly wanted to give J something they would like themselves. :)
I think I'm going to duck next time I run into J's mom or grandma.
True confession, the boys had gift money that I had been meaning (and promising to let them spend) so I let them each buy one of the noisy trucks, too. They didn't beg and they are pretty much never allowed to buy toys. I just told them that they had some gift money and they could pick one thing and guess what they chose? Yeah, I know, what was I thinking?! So, I'm headed out until tomorrow - leaving Andrew with some spiffy new toys. :) He's gonna love me, too.

LOL! Love it Alaina! Mark did theis to me back in April as I put Lucy in the car for an 8 hr drive- he handed her a harmonica!
Hugs, Jill
LOL! Last year we gave Josh or maybe it was Noah really loud cars that run and crash into each other. Kim still talks to me so don't worry about it. :) Kids love that kind of stuff and the batteries will run out eventually. LOL
Confession: Four weeks ago, I bought a firetruck birthday card for my nephew that wails like a siren every time it's opened. (I'm blushing just typing that.) My SIL informed me that it got lost in her sock drawer that night.
I'm also embarassed that I actually spent $5 on a CARD, but the look on his face when he opened it was definitely worth the $5 and the wrath of my lovely SIL.

We had a very similar experience at the toy store the other day when Meredith needed to buy a toy for a party and insisted on a very glittery Rapunzel Barbie doll where you can add hair extensions and cut her hair. I pointed out all of these other really cool puzzles and games and educational toys but she insisted that THIS had to be the present. Since it's her friend, I went along with it. Kids ...
