Teeth, Teeth

I have spent today immersed in the dental field. It's the annual IDA (Indiana Dental Association) conference. I spent 6 hours in continuing education classes, enjoyed lunch in between the classes with my husband, and went to the exhibit hall to see what's new in the field, talk to various reps, and to pick up some free samples. It was a long day but I really do enjoy my profession - though I don't spend much time in it anymore. And I enjoy the dental professional world where everyone understands the same lingo - although I find it amusing that we sit in classes for hours talking about teeth.

Anyway, if you have any questions about periodontal disease, feel free to ask. :) It's all very fresh in my mind! And if you smoke, please, please stop. It's not only bad for your health but it's also horrible for your teeth and gums - not that this is new news. :)

Tomorrow will be another 3 hours of continuing education (this time hands-on versus lecture) and then a staff appreciation lunch. I'm exhausted but I know it will be good. I feel that it is so important for me to keep up with the profession to give my patients the best care possible. I'm truly thankful that God called me in to dentistry!

I believe dentistry is a calling. I can't imagine having my hands in someones mouth. Spit is not my thing.

I had no idea you have conferences like this. I wish nursing had the same. It would be an efficient and fun way to get continuing education.

Is there any (rather) inexpensive ways to whiten ceramics, other than resurfacing them? I know that my ceramics (which is everything that can be seen in my mouth) have gotten more yellow since I've gotten them, but I didn't think the over-the-counter whiteners will work. Any suggestions?

Hey Jenna, I'm sorry to say that whitening products will not work due to it being a dental material and not tooth enamel. There really aren't other alternatives unfortunately (at least that I know of) other than replacement etc.

O.K. here goes. Its not a question about periodontal disease, but...
I was getting my teeth cleaned by the hygenist yesterday and when she was using the ultrasonic tool it was spraying water all over my face. I am serious. All of my makeup came off and mascara running. I asked her why it was doing that because I've had that instrument used on me before and never had that experience. She said it was a new "tip" and thats what happens. What is your take on this? just curious.

Hey Paula, Likely she had the water turned up too high (but I don't know what model she was using) - in my humble opinion, it should not do that. :) I always tell my patients that they might get a little wet and give them paper towels - usually they don't need them. Sorry for the drenching experience. :)

Oh and JEnna, that was me above - not Andrew. :) He had signed on and I didn't realize it! :)

Thanks for the answer Alaina, that is kind of what I thought. I am lucky that I didn't have to go anywhere after the appt. I like the hygenist and she does a great job, so I'll just deal with it.
Congrats to the winners of the contest. Darn, those were some good prizes too :)
