Now, I know that this year brings a significant birthday for me and I know that I started finding a few gray hairs at 19. I know I have three kids, a husband, a house, and I know that I drive a minivan. I also know that I now color my hair, I know that I often have circles under my eyes and I know that I look better with a little make-up. But seriously...am I ma'am?
Today I was called ma'am by a 21-year-old - 21. He's about the age of my brother (and not the youngest one). And I couldn't help but feel old - very, very old. If he had only said it once, I probably would hardly have noticed (okay, who am I kidding :)) BUT he said it multiple times. That, my friends, cannot be ignored. Sigh. Bring on the wrinkles, bring on the arthritis, bring on the gray but try and hold the ma'am for at least another 5 years.
Don't even get me started on the 20-something female that called me sweetie...

Ha ha ha ha! It's because of the minivan! ;)
Down here the teenagers in the grocery store call everyone ma'am! I was like "huh?" then they did the same to my sister who is 26 so I got over it.
Yeah, I hated it when i started being Ma'am instead of miss. But i guess over the years you get used to it. better than being called mister i guess lol
Very southern - just assume he is from the south.
I asked...hoping he was, he wasn't. :)
Wow! Girl you look hot and don't you forget it! Maybe he was saying Damn as in damn, she is hot!
Lol, Muriel...wouldn't that be nice?! :)
Military maybe? I get it alot just because of my environment, but even so, still don't like it. I come to accept it because it is usually from the newbies and they are just programed to say it.
oh MAN! I have gotten that & it makes me feel old too. Come on, I have 1 1/2 yrs until I hit 30. Although I don't have a van...yet I do have gray hairs & have started dying my hair. It takes ALOT to make me cry & finding those grays made me cry.
It's a badge of honor! You are a mom of 3 kids, you deserve to be a ma'am. And my guess would be either he was raised in the military or was raised by parents who drilled manners....neither of which are bad things! I'll be 30 in a month, and I call everyone ma'am :) Now, the sweetie comment does get on my nerves a bunch, or the guy at the gas station that calls me "doll". Ugh.
