WFMW: Taco Seasoning

The week before last when I was menu planning, I thought to myself, “Self, there is no need to buy a packet of taco seasoning which probably has additives; you can make your own.” The problem was that I had no idea what proportions or even what all would be included in an equivalent taco seasoning mix. So, to the internet I turned and specifically to allrecipes.com (one of my favorite go-to sites for new recipes). I quickly found a taco seasoning recipe that got some great reviews! We tried it in our Taco Soup last week and it was great! I’m sold…not only is it cheaper and healthy but it’s made of things that I mostly keep on hand and it only took a couple of minutes to make. And that’s what works for me! Check out Rocks in My Dryer for lots more ideas.

TACO SEASONING
1 Tb. chili powder
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (I decreased the amount & substituted what I had on hand: cayenne pepper)
1/4 tsp. oregano
1 1/2 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper

Combine and use in place of 1 taco seasoning packet.

Thank you!!! I have been needing to look up a taco seasoning recipe and you saved me the time and effort. I am going to go get a recipe card and write this one down right away...And I can't wait to check out allrecipes.com :^)

I found a great taco meat recipe a few months back too. Might actually cook up to taste the same as just adding the taco seasoning to hamburger, but it does include onions, if ever you want it.

Thanks for this! I never buy those and just make something up as I go because I've never got it quite right. This is perfect!

Thanks, Alaina! Taco season packets are so ridiculously expensive, don't you think?

Mary, I tried to find your blog but it wasn't listed - I would really like to have your taco meat recipe.

Monica, I definitely agree that the packets are very expensive! And it's always inconvenient when you want to quickly make something but don't have a packet on hand.

Here is the Taco Meat Filling recipe I use. I got it off of cooks.com and really love it (I think good taco meat makes the taco)

1 lb ground beef, chicken or turkey
8 oz. tomato sauce
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c chopped onions
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
Brown meat. Stir or chop until crumbly. Drain fat. Stir in other ingredients. Cover and simmer 10 minutes. Add to taco shells and garnish as desired.
